Venue Description

Founded in 1620, Greyfriars Kirk is an iconic building situated in the heart of Scotland's capital. It is a beautiful and atmospheric space for worship. Also with a magnificent acoustic, the Kirk is often host to many performing arts events including orchestral and choral concerts and organ recitals.

This venue is signed up to the Best Practice Code.

What makes this venue special?

Greyfriars Kirk has played a notable part in Scotland's history. In 1638 the National Covenant was signed in the Kirk. A former minister was instrumental in changing forms of worship and introduced hymns and the organ into Sunday services. Greyfriars is also the first post Reformation church with stained glass windows.

Venue Programming

This beautiful and atmospheric space can be adapted for a variety or uses. Orchestral and choral concerts are a favourite but opera, plays, dances are also possible. The Kirk is an ideal space for art exhibitions. The Kirk can also be used for dances, ceilidhs and social receptions.

Performance spaces

Performance Space Details - Main Church Sanctuary (audience capacity 450)

A large rectangular sanctuary with raised chancel at the East end. Organ at West end. Flexible seating. Performances are usually at East end but platforms up to 36m2 can be erected at ether end of the church.

  • Lighting: Basic white light only flood lighing can be provided.
  • Sound: Church PA system for voice only.
  • Storage: Nil.
  • Dressing Space: Two large green rooms available.
